Word Counter for Essays

Count the words, characters, sentences and paragraphs in an essay draft, with a reading-time estimate, before you paste the text into a submission box.

How It Works

An essay word counter is only useful if its rules match the rules your assignment uses, so this page explains exactly how each of the six numbers is produced before you quote one in a submission box.

Words. The engine extracts every run of Unicode letters and digits. That means a contraction such as "don't" counts as two words, a hyphenated compound such as "well-known" also counts as two, and a number such as "2024" counts once. CJK characters are handled separately: each one counts as a single word, which is how Chinese and Japanese essays are usually measured. Emoji and punctuation never add to the total.

Characters. Two figures are reported. "With spaces" is the raw string length, including line breaks, and "without spaces" removes every whitespace character first. A portal that asks for characters including spaces wants the larger figure.

Sentences. The draft is split on periods, exclamation marks and question marks, and every non-empty fragment counts. This is a structural signal, not a grammar check: an abbreviation or a decimal point creates an extra fragment.

Paragraphs. A paragraph ends at a blank line. A single newline keeps the text inside the same paragraph, which matches Markdown and most editors.

Reading time. The word count is divided by 200 words per minute and rounded up, with a minimum of one minute. A 900-word essay shows five minutes, the number to quote if you are presenting the same text aloud.

Every count is recalculated as you type, and the draft stays in the browser tab: no text is uploaded, so an unpublished essay can be pasted without risk.

How to check an essay against a word limit

  1. Paste the body text only: leave out the title page, reference list and appendices unless the limit explicitly covers them.
  2. Read the Words metric first, because minimum and maximum limits are almost always stated in words.
  3. Check Paragraphs next — a single block of prose with no blank lines reports as one paragraph however many sentences it holds.
  4. Compare Characters (with spaces) if the submission portal counts characters rather than words.
  5. Quote the Reading time figure when the same text will be read aloud or presented.

How the counter treats awkward essay text

well-known2 wordsThe hyphen separates two letter runs

Dr. Smith arrived.2 sentencesEvery period ends a sentence, so abbreviations inflate the total

Examples

Input

This is a sample essay introduction.

Output

Words: 6; Characters (with spaces): 36; Characters (without spaces): 31; Sentences: 1; Paragraphs: 1; Reading time: 1 min

One sentence of ordinary essay prose. Six words, and the period closes one sentence.

Input

Essay

Second paragraph here. Two sentences now.

Output

Words: 7; Characters (with spaces): 48; Characters (without spaces): 41; Sentences: 2; Paragraphs: 2; Reading time: 1 min

A blank line separates two paragraphs, and both total 7 words.

Input

Output

Words: 0; Characters (with spaces): 3; Characters (without spaces): 0; Sentences: 0; Paragraphs: 0; Reading time: 0 min

Boundary case: three spaces. Characters with spaces counts them, every other metric stays at zero, and no error is raised.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this match the word count in Microsoft Word?
Not always exactly. Word treats a hyphenated compound as one word and counts CJK text differently, while this counter splits on punctuation and counts each CJK character separately. Where a submission portal publishes its own counter, that portal is the authority: paste the draft there as a final check and use this page while editing.
Should I paste the title page and reference list?
Paste only what the limit covers. Most style guides exclude the title page, reference list and appendices from the body count, so leaving them out gives the number a marker expects. If your assignment counts the whole document, paste everything instead.
How do I check a 500-word or 1000-word minimum?
Paste the draft and read the Words metric, which updates on every keystroke. A 500-word minimum means the figure must reach 500, not 499. For a maximum, stay comfortably below it, because another counter may treat hyphenated compounds as one word and report a different total.
Are Chinese and Japanese essays counted correctly?
Each CJK character counts as one word, so a four-character Chinese phrase returns four words. That matches how such essays are usually measured. A mixed draft adds Latin words on top of the CJK total instead of replacing it, so bilingual work is counted consistently.

Limitations & Accuracy

Sentence totals split on every period, exclamation mark and question mark, so abbreviations such as Dr. and decimals such as 3.14 inflate the count. Contractions and hyphenated compounds count as two words, emoji are ignored by the word count but occupy two units in the with-spaces figure, reading time assumes 200 words per minute, and a reference list is counted only if you paste it.
